Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
