United Nations Removes Sanctions on Syrian President Ahead of Presidential Visit
Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit the following week.
He became interim leader after leading a revolutionary movement that ousted the previous leader in December 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of domestic strife.
The US representative to the UN Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
He had been subject to global penalties while commanding the Islamist group HTS, once connected to al-Qaeda. The US removed HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations during July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The two leaders convened on their first occasion in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.
After that meeting, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".
His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Prior United States Journey
Monday's visit will not be the president's debut journey to the United States in the current year. During September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to address the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
